Relationships have always been important to us

While we’re very technical and have a good grasp of where we want to go and how we want to get there, we don’t minimise the importance of relationship building - and enhancing those relationships along the way is absolutely key to our success.

If I could give you one piece of career advice, it would be…

…Pick your mentors. Pick your relationships wisely – thoughtfully – never burn that bridge. Keep those important relationships where you’ve learnt a lot, and if you move on, don’t allow the relationship to move away, maintain it. It’s a long journey.

I love the dynamism at ACE

ACE has grown a lot since I joined, but it’s always been very flat structured, very nimble with a very quick decision making processes – you get an awful lot done in a day, it’s very dynamic. We are a very disciplined underwriting company and that discipline, especially around acquisitions we’ve made, has really helped us a lot.

We really are a truly international company

A lot of companies have operations outside the US – but few are truly international. If you look at our international operations - as part of the group – we’re huge – completely international. In terms of what that means to the way we work - significant authority rests in the local operation - so you are hugely empowered to make decisions and you’ll be held accountable for them.

We’re good at managing change and embracing technology and new ways of working to become a more streamlined and effective business, utilising data and MI in our underwriting decisions, to make smarter and more commercial decisions – not to replace the underwriter, but to give them better tools to make better decisions.
